debianYap! It is! Why do we choose debian? Because debian is the old linux distro but not old linux distro. How could we say that? Ian murdock, he is the founder of debian. Developed since 1993 until now (2012), debian has 6 release. What a long journey. As we know, usually used for linux server debian only release the stable and major version every 2 years and debian’s package is always stable. That’s why debian team only release every 2 years. Debian‘s developer team focused on stability and security and it is used as a base for many other distributions.

Recent Release support an improvement number of ARM processor architecture and NAS devices. Other NAS devics supported by Debian, but maybe not widely-used by home users.

  • Debian‘s Package Management
    • dpkg, installing local .deb packages

It’s the based of debian package management to install, remove and provide information about local .deb packages

    • APT, installing packages from repositories

APT expands the functionality of dpkg by searching, fetching, installing, removing, upgrading the packages. Using APT is easier than installing the packages one by one, and we always have notifications about the latest packages upgrade.

  • Debian Live
  • Desktop Environment

Debian provides stables and testing CD images, debian used to built for GNOME as the default desktop environment but user can install KDE, Xfce, LXDE, Enlightenment, OpenBox, Fluxbox, GNUStep, IceWM and others.

 Debian‘s derivatives simple list :

  • Aptosid : Multilingual desktop-oriented, based on Debian unstable. Formerly sidux
  • Elive : Featuring Enlightenment as the only window manager. Aims to be intuitive and easy to use.
  • Linux Mint Debian Edition : Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a rolling distribution based on Debian Testing. Available in 32 and 64-bit as a live DVD with a Gnome window manager. The purpose is to look similiar to the main Linux Mint edition and to provide the same functionality while using Debian.
  • MEPIS : Focus on ease of use. Also includes lightweight variant called antiX. antiX is meant to be used on older computers with limited hardware.
  • Ubuntu : A distribution sponsored by Canonical Ltd. Aims to offer a complete and polished desktop on a single CD.
  • Vyatta : Commercial open source network operating system includes routing, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention and more. Designed to be an open source Cisco replacement.
  • Xebian : For the Xbox home gaming console.
